Crown of Thorns Starfish
Biodiversity is where there is a variety of living organisms in a ecosystem or habitat. One example is the coral reef, and the crown of thorns starfish. This starfish is very big and destructive to the coral in the Great Barrier Reef on the coast of Australia and western Pacific reefs. It eats the living tissue of the coral and leaves nothing of the coral except the bright white skeleton. Lately the population of the crown of thorns starfish has been growing. The bigger the population, the more coral gets eaten. There has been a debate weather the amount of coral being eaten is natural or if the population growth of the crown of thorn it is due to over- fishing of the few mollusk that eat the crown of thorn starfish. There possibly was an organism that kept the population of the starfish down, allowing more coral to grow in the western Pacific reef and the Australian Great Barrier Reef. Now that a lot of organisms (most are unknown to man) are endangered, or have gone extinct. You may not think that some mollusk have an important part in there ecosystem, so some people might say it's okay to fish a lot of them, but it's not always okay. They help the coral by keeping the crown of thorns starfish population down.
There are many reasons why we need biodiversity. One reason is that over 70,000 plants are used in traditional medicines. With out these plants, then some sicknesses of diseases will be impossible to control, such as cancer, or malaria. Another reason is that if you have to much one on type of animal there tends to be health problems. An example is in breeding dogs, such as Dalmatians. The more you breed them together (Dalmatian to Dalmatian) the more health problems. The main health problem for Dalmatians is blindness. Most people think of breeding these dogs for how they look, but they don't care how much their dog will suffer from disease or health problems.
